My 3 completed cover designs
My 3 animated movie poster designs have been created through illustrator and are all unique. All three I have made to follow my brand with the art style and the colour. All of my characters I have designed to have no face to keep it ambiguous and vague. This design will mean the children will be able to identify and relate to any character which will be inspiring. “In order to appeal to fans of the horror genre, designers commonly utilize dark colors such as black, gray, red, and purple, as well as negative space, which creates suspenseful compositions that leave certain elements up to the viewer’s imagination” (Tribu, N.D). Although of course I am appealing to a family demographic, I still utilised this idea of artfully placing darker colours to symbolise a more Halloween ambience. The atmosphere in all 3 movies was dictated by me with purple and orange hues to connote a spooky theme however not too scary as it for a family. My first poster, ‘Citrus Spooktakular’ was created to be an movie poster about trick or treating but of course the candy has become oranges. I drew this on illustrator from reference pictures I took. I used different colour composition tactics to emphasise shadows. My secondary poster, ‘Pumpkin Palace’ was created as an outdoor scene that shows a pumpkin house in the forest where a witch lives. I chose shades of purple and orange to signify a Halloween motif. “Pumpkins in horror don’t just signify that it’s Halloween; they convey the feeling that something dark yet playful is going on” (Octoberverse, 2023). The use of pumpkins is done purposefully to emphasise the brand and Halloween ambience. I intended to create a connection between my posters and Halloween therefore it would draw in more viewers and potential fans. Whilst making this poster, my classmate inspired me to add shadows which gave the poster and artwork more dimension and character. My last poster is for, ‘Whimsical Woods’ was also created on illustrator. I used a picture of my dog to create the dog and an image of my friend to become the main character. The composition of the poster draws the viewers eyes to all aspects of the posters. For all 3 posters, I decided to use the same font for the title of the film, the font is whimsical and emphasises the fantasy aspect of children’s films which I of course would like to capture. “Fantasy Fonts can transport us to enchanted realms, evoke a sense of awe and wonder” (Markeefonts, 2023). I wanted to go beyond just the aesthetic and use the font in order to prepare the viewer for what they are going to see when they watch the film. For example, the fantasy element is clearly shown with the unusual, mythical font. This was important because children’s movies are stereotypically creative and I wanted to incorporate this into the typography, colour and overall poster. For all 3 posters I incorporated the ‘Mystique’ logo in order to connect the movies to the brand. “A powerful advertising tool, studios and producers use it to boost a film’s promotional allure by positioning high-profile names front and center” (Film/Art Gallery, 2023). I used a billing block on my poster to conform to movie poster stereotypes and it will also bring in movie literate fans whether that be parents of children or even just Halloween lovers.
